Indonesia Vigorously Promotes Waste Sorting Projects to Boost RDF Resource Utilization and Achieve Dual Benefits

Release time:2026 / 01 / 12 16:20:40

Reportedly, with the acceleration of urbanization, Indonesia is facing increasing pressure in waste disposal, and waste sorting and resource utilization have become key paths to solve the dilemma. Latest data shows that Indonesia generates 68.5 million tons of solid waste annually, of which recyclable and combustible components account for over 40%. However, the traditional disposal method is mainly landfill, which not only causes resource waste but also increases environmental burden. Against this backdrop, the Indonesian government, guided by policies, vigorously promotes the construction of waste sorting projects and simultaneously develops RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel) resource utilization, building a closed-loop system of "sorting and recycling + energy conversion" to achieve a win-win situation in environmental governance and energy supply.

The Indonesian government has included waste sorting as a core task in the "2025 Indonesia Clean Waste Plan", clarifying the goal of reducing waste at the source by 30% and increasing sorting efficiency by 70% by the end of 2025. At the policy level, in addition to simplifying project approval processes and introducing incentive measures, it also guides the public to sort at the source through community recycling systems such as "waste banks" to provide stable raw material guarantees for sorting projects. Currently, Indonesia has launched large-scale waste sorting projects in various places such as Gresik Regency in East Java Province and Manado in North Sulawesi Province: the intelligent sorting plant built through international cooperation is equipped with automatic sorting equipment and manual sorting stations, which can accurately separate wet waste, plastics, paper and other components. Among them, combustible waste is processed into RDF fuel through crushing, drying, molding and other processes, with a daily output of 12.8 tons, directly supplied to local cement enterprises to replace coal; the sorting project in Manado links with the river waste interception system, sorting the recovered waste into RDF to support the implementation of the "Garbage-Free River" plan.

International technological cooperation has become an important support for the implementation of waste sorting and RDF projects. Many Chinese environmental protection enterprises have participated in the construction of multiple key projects in Indonesia with advanced sorting equipment and RDF preparation technology. Their intelligent sorting systems can increase the purity of waste sorting to more than 95%, and the calorific value of RDF products reaches 60%-80% of raw coal, meeting industrial combustion standards. These projects not only greatly reduce landfill pressure but also reduce a large amount of fossil fuel consumption every year, helping Indonesia promote the renewable energy substitution plan. Industry insiders said that the waste sorting and RDF resource utilization model is becoming an important starting point for Indonesia's circular economy development. It is expected that by 2030, the related industry will create an economic output value of 200 trillion Indonesian rupiahs, while reducing waste generation by 50%, providing referenceable practical experience for waste governance in Southeast Asian countries.
